President of AT&T to Speak at Annual MLK Service

Sylvia Russell, President of AT&T Georgia, will be the guest speaker at the annual celebration hosted by four area colleges to honor the memory and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The program, hosted by Augusta State University, Augusta Technical College, Georgia Health Sciences University and Paine College, will be at noon Friday, Jan. 13, at Gilbert-Lambuth Memorial Chapel on the campus of Paine College.

In her more than 15 years with AT&T, Russell has supported the company’s efforts to keep customers connected while giving back to Georgia communities. From 2008-10, AT&T invested more than $3.3 billion in Georgia’s wireless and wireline network. Also during that time, the company and its foundation contributed more than $26.9 million to key philanthropic initiatives in Georgia, mainly focused on addressing high school success and workforce readiness.

Prior to the merger of AT&T and BellSouth, Russell served as Vice President of AT&T External Affairs, Southeast, overseeing public policy within the region. She has also served as Senior Attorney for AT&T’s Government Markets Business Unit and General Attorney, supporting AT&T’s entry into the local telecommunications market. In 2000, she was named Vice President of Law and Government Affairs for the southern region.

She has been named one of the 100 Most Influential Georgians by Georgia Trend and one of the 100 Most Influential Atlantans by the Atlanta Regional Commission. She was named to the Academy of Women Achievers by the YWCA and named one of the “Women Making History – Women Leaders in Business” by the Georgia Women’s Legislative Caucus.

Russell is a member of the Boards of Directors of the State Board of Technical and Adult Education, the Commerce Club, the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, Atlanta Landmarks, the Georgia Corporation for Economic Development, the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce and the Woodruff Arts Center.

She earned a bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University and a Juris Doctor degree from Rutgers School of Law. The service will also feature performances by a combined choir from all four institutions. Donations will also be collected for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial Foundation.
