AUGUSTA TECHNICAL COLLEGE TO HOLD GRADUATION
More than 300 Augusta Technical College students will receive certificates, diplomas and/or degrees at Graduation on Wednesday, June 15, at 7pm, in the James Brown Arena.
The commencement speaker for this occasion will be Dr. Sam Sullivan. Dr. Sullivan serves as vice president for academic affairs (VPAA) at Augusta State University. A 40-year veteran of higher education, he has demonstrated a commitment to academic excellence, effective planning and assessment, and student success. As VPAA he leads implementation of the university’s strategic planning initiatives.
A native of Charlotte, North Carolina, Dr. Sullivan earned the B.S. degree in physics and mathematics from North Carolina Central University and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in physics from Howard University.
After finishing graduate school, Dr. Sullivan began his career as a member of the physics faculty at Federal City College in Washington, D.C. In later years as a college administrator, Dr. Sullivan participated in the merger of Federal City College, Washington Technical Institute, and the District of Columbia Teachers College into the University of the District of Columbia (UDC).
In addition to a record of outstanding teaching and service, his accomplishments included the establishment of a Division of Research, Training, and International Programs. Dr. Sullivan also led university efforts to develop academic programs with agencies and institutions in Egypt, the Dominican Republic, South Africa, and Russia.
Dr. Sullivan has proven himself invaluable to the community by serving on numerous boards.
He is Augusta State University’s recipient of the Richard S. Wallace Distinguished Service Award for 2011. It recognizes outstanding service to the university, students, and community.
As a member of the Alpha Mu Boulé of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity and Psi Omega Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Dr. Sullivan takes great pride in mentoring young men to reach their potential through education. Dr. Sullivan is married to Dr. Lucinda Ross Sullivan and they have one son.
